Just when I thought I was getting a grip on the terminology of this new world (PPE, pre-symptomatic, asymptomatic, quarantine pods), a new one plops down in front of me: CHAZ. A few days ago, the only Chaz I knew was a friend of my daughter’s. Now along with helicopters, it's the latest part of my neighborhood.
Speaking of my daughter, if you have kids, you also know that school’s out, camps are cancelled and summer sports are up in the air. Instead, we evaluate socially-distanced events and safe pod groups while discovering that our friends have different and evolving risk profiles. Pace yourself. It's going to be a long summer.
A couple thoughts to help manage.
- Switch up meal ownership. Admittedly, we’re late to this game but recently we found that rotating dinner responsibility was a big win. They get to pick the meal, plan for it, prep it and cook it. If we don’t have the ingredients, they pick them up during our frequent grocery runs. For those who don’t normally cook, it’s a huge confidence booster. For the rest of us, we get exposed to new things outside the standards that we’ve been recycling for weeks. Plus, it’s nice to give someone else the room to take charge. Btw, this also works for work meetings.
- Don’t forget to over-communicate. If you’re like me, you've been part of an email or instant message chain that went off the rails. Context gets lost. Words are ambiguous. We all have too much time to ourselves to mull over sentence fragments and infer meaning. When you find yourself doing this, stop. Give the other person the benefit of the doubt. Ask for clarification by email or, better yet, live by phone or video call. If you’re drafting an email, read it before you send it. Does it make sense? Is there more information that would make it clearer? Brevity only works with clarity, which requires time and effort. Sometimes it’s easier to just empty your thoughts on a page.
